the color of water
Oceans, tides, rivers, and lakes - water is symbolic of feminine power in mythic tradition. The source of all life, water is maternal and sensual, immersing the body in primeval sensations. Birth, renewal, healing, and rebirth are sanctified in rites of passage through water. Naiads, mermaids, selkies, nymphs, Aphrodite, The Lady of the Lake, Undine, Ophelia, Ukifune - female beings associated with water abound in folklore and literature. Eternal and ever-changing, yielding and inundating, life-giving and deadly, water represents the paradoxical mystique of the feminine archetype. This ongoing series explores these connections in dreamlike images of women and water.
